Room on the Broom Activity & Potion
I don’t know about y’all, but one of our favorite Halloween books and movies is Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. It’s perfect for my kiddos who are 4 & 6, just enough spooky for the 4 year old. 👻 I had the idea to make the potion from the book and thought I would share!
List of Items:
We had all of this on hand, don’t stress if you don’t have an item.
Potion Kit: We picked ours up at our local toy store.
Bones: Target had a jar of bones that was perfect, this is totally optional. Could also make some out of q-tips perhaps?
Stuffed Animals: Cat, Dog, Frog, Bird
Scavenger Hunt Items from Neighborhood Walk: Twigs, Pinecones and Flowers

Room on the Broom Activity and Potion Making:
First, we read the book together and my six year old made a list of all the items we needed to find.
We had two scavenger hunts! The first one was inside to find the characters in the book (dog, cat, frog, bird).
Next, we put on our shoes and went for a walk in the neighborhood to find the pinecones, twigs and flowers.
After we got home, I let the kiddos watch the movie edition of Room on the Broom while I set up the materials for the potion.
I set the table with all the goods! See photo gallery above :)
I let the kiddos sort the items and match the characters with the item they throw in the cauldron from the story.
Next, we made our potions. I had a potion making kit on hand and just followed the directions. I also included instructions above for a DIY potion you can make with items you more than likely have at home.
After mixing, stirring, making messes and having fun, we bottled our potions. They were bright and glittery and contained all the necessary items from the story.
MY FAV PART: After a few days I decided to purchase The Room On The Broom Story Time Set. While the kids were away, I added the figurines to the potions, a few sprinkles of glitter and voilà, the potions worked!! Our potions conjured up the entire Room on the Broom crew!!! #winning
I hope you enjoyed this idea and if you try it with your kiddos, I would love to hear from you! Keep on rockin’ moms and dads, it ain’t easy but it sure is worth it.
XOXO
